Volkswagen Slovakia celebrates 35 years and 8 million vehicles produced

Volkswagen Slovakia is marking the 35th anniversary of its establishment. Since the plant was founded on 30 May 1991, Bratislava has grown into the Volkswagen brand’s second-largest production plant in Europe. At the same time, the company has reached another historic milestone – on Friday, the 8-millionth vehicle rolled off the production line, a Volkswagen Passat destined for a customer in the neighbouring Czech Republic.

Wolfram Kirchert, Chairman of the Board of Management and Board Member for Technical Affairs at Volkswagen Slovakia: “The success story of Volkswagen Slovakia is the result of the plant's ability to respond flexibly to market conditions and meet requirements for productivity, efficiency and precision in manufacturing, while reliably achieving the highest quality. Managing high product complexity in conjunction with integrating advanced technologies is what drives us forward.” He also added: “Over 35 years, the Bratislava plant team has built stable partnerships with the Group and its brands. Since 1991, Volkswagen has invested approximately 6 billion euros in the plant's development, confirming its clear commitment to the production plant in Bratislava."

Volkswagen Slovakia employs approximately 11 400 people who contribute to the production of ten models for four Group brands: Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche and Škoda. It has been a reliable and stable employer for many decades. It is also a responsible partner to the region as the country's largest company, investor and exporter.

The story of Volkswagen Slovakia began shortly before Christmas 1991, when the first Volkswagen Passat Variant was manufactured. In the following decades, the plant grew continuously – new models and technologies were added, and production increased from dozens to more than a thousand cars a day. The Bratislava plant achieved several firsts: the Volkswagen Group's first series-produced SUVs in 2002 and the first fully electric series-production vehicle in the entire Volkswagen Group,
e-up!, in 2013. The plant's latest chapter is the Porsche Cayenne Electric, the first fully electric SUV produced in Bratislava, which is also manufactured in a Coupé version.

Volkswagen Slovakia is celebrating the 35th anniversary of the company's founding together with its employees. Along with a commemorative gift, the company has prepared an exceptional exhibition of special vehicles that shaped the history of Volkswagen Slovakia for them. On Monday, 1 June, the Bratislava plant will also host an official celebration of the 35th anniversary, attended by the management of the Volkswagen brand, social partners and representatives of public life at both regional and national levels. Finally, this year the Bratislava plant will once again open its gates to employees, their families and loved ones as part of an open day.
