ZP Polymers, s.r.o.: How to reduce defects and claims in prefabrication already at the master model stage
In prefabrication, a lot of attention is paid to concrete, reinforcement, and logistics. Far less is said about where quality truly begins – the master model (mold). Our experience shows that every small flaw in the model gets multiplied significantly in serial production. We will show you three high-risk material areas and a simple process to make production predictable instead of constantly firefighting issues.

Three risk areas in materials for a master model (pattern)

1. Porous materials

For models made from MDF or composites, it is critical that the surface should “stop breathing” after final finishing. If microchannels and pores are not thoroughly sealed, residual air may escape during elastomer curing, which causes microdefects on the mould surface and shortens its service life. Moreover, elastomeric moulds are difficult to repair and it is often necessary to cast new ones, which is very expensive.

2. Wood

Even dried and sealed wood shrinks and changes dimensions over time. Knots, the remnants of branches, pose the greatest risk of unwanted air bubbles, which appear as defects during elastomer curing.
Solution: wooden models must be processed and cast as soon as possible after completion.

3. Series production and archiving

Original master models are not always suitable for mass production of moulds. It is better to replace them with material that does not change dimensions even over time, to maintain the accuracy, texture and quality of the prefabricated part throughout the mould's service life and during archiving.

What does this mean for your production?

Investing in a properly designed and technically reliable master model:

  • reduces defects and complaints
  • shortens production cycles
  • and turns production into a predictable process instead of constantly firefighting problems

The master model is the silent bearer of quality. When it is good, no one notices it. When it is bad, the entire project pays the price.
At ZP Polymers, s.r.o. we have tested in practice how to proceed with each type of model. Do not hesitate to contact us with questions.
