Radiation Sterilization of Medical Devices by BGS: A Safe and Efficient Standard for the Modern Healthcare Industry
Why is radiation sterilization ideal for medical devices?
Manufacturers of medical devices face demanding requirements for safety, delivery speed, and compliance with strict regulatory standards. Radiation sterilization offers a solution that meets these needs – without the use of high temperatures or chemicals, with a high degree of effectiveness and proven reliability.
It is a process that uses ionizing radiation to inactivate microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi, and spores). Unlike traditional methods, it does not require high temperatures, leaves no residues, and enables sterilization of products in sealed final packaging, significantly reducing the risk of recontamination.
Key benefits for medical device manufacturers:
Reliable effectiveness
- Guaranteed Sterility Assurance Level (SAL) ≤ 10⁻⁶
- Validated processes in accordance with ISO 11137
Material compatibility
- Suitable for heat-sensitive polymers (PE, PP, PVC, PU, silicone)
- Enables sterilization of assembled or hermetically sealed products without contamination risk
Speed and manufacturing flexibility
- High processing capacity with consistent quality
- Supports just-in-time logistics (reduced warehousing, faster deliveries)
Regulatory compliance
- Certified according to ISO 13485 and ISO 9001
- Full documentation and batch traceability for audit purposes
Two technologies for different types of medical products
Radiation sterilization can be performed using two proven technologies: gamma radiation (⁶⁰Co) and electron beam (e-beam). These differ primarily in radiation penetration, exposure time, and suitability for specific products.
- Gamma sterilization uses highly penetrating gamma rays, making it ideal for complex, multi-layered, or dense products such as catheters, syringes, implants, or surgical kits – including those already hermetically packaged.
- E-beam sterilization uses high-energy electrons and is particularly suitable for low-density products with uniform geometry, such as films, plastic components, or packaging materials. With its short exposure time, it allows for very fast processing and is also ideal for surface decontamination.
Comprehensive service including expert consulting
In addition to the sterilization process itself, BGS offers comprehensive expert support – from microbiological validation and optimal packaging design to technical consulting in selecting the appropriate technology. This approach is especially beneficial for companies entering regulated markets, launching new products, or optimizing existing sterilization processes.
