The total ban on combustion cars has been scrapped; they will continue to be sold after 2035
The new proposal provides for a reduction of 90 % after 2035 compared with 2021. Carmakers can offset the remaining 10 % by using low-carbon steel produced in the EU, or by using environmentally friendly fuels that are considered carbon-neutral.
Originally, emissions were to fall by 100 %. This would have meant that new “combustion-engine cars” could no longer be sold in the EU. However, under pressure from carmakers and some industrial countries, including Slovakia, this de facto ban is now set to be lifted.
