LIFOCOLOR presents trends in the design of plastic products and packaging
What determines whether a plastic product or packaging appeals to us at first sight and touch? Colour helps brands communicate, evokes emotions and influences our decisions. However, the material’s surface and the way a product feels are also playing an increasingly important role. Lifocolor responds to both trends by presenting new possibilities for the sensory design of plastic packaging while revealing the colour directions set to shape 2027.

Where plastic product design meets the sense of touch

Plastic product design is increasingly focused on the overall sensory experience. What matters is how a product feels in the hand and what impression of quality it conveys upon first contact. At the same time, it must meet manufacturing, processing and recycling requirements.

This trend is illustrated by the Velvet PET masterbatch from the Lifocolor PET Solutions product range. It gives PET bottles manufactured using ISBM technology (a process that produces no flash or production scrap) a soft, matt and velvety surface that resembles premium HDPE packaging. With a suitable bottle design, ISBM technology can also help reduce wall thickness and does not generate the trimming waste typically associated with extrusion blow moulding.

The formulation can be adapted to the selected material PET or rPET, as well as to the required colour, opacity and intensity of the tactile effect. The solution is particularly suitable for cosmetic, food, pharmaceutical and medical packaging.

For brands considering a switch from HDPE to PET, it offers a way to retain the packaging’s matt appearance and pleasant feel while supporting a design based predominantly on a single polymer material. This is becoming increasingly important in view of both the availability of rPET and the requirements of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). Recyclability must, however, always be assessed for the packaging as a whole, including the closure, label, decoration and colour scheme.

Colours that bring emotion to plastic products

Colour helps a product communicate, evoke emotions and build a connection with the user. This is the idea behind the Shades of Inspiration 2027 collection and its central concept, „The Human Re:Set“. It responds to the need for greater balance, authenticity and humanity in a rapidly changing world. The colours are designed to soothe, encourage and inspire while giving plastic products a distinctive character.

The collection comprises four trend worlds:

  • Radiant Rebels – energy, courage and creative freedom,
  • Structured Ease – calm, simplicity and order,
  • Cultural Weave – an interweaving of cultural influences and traditions,
  • Velvet Tomorrow – a gentle and optimistic vision of the future.

The colour concepts are intended for packaging, consumer goods, cosmetics, interiors, sports and lifestyle products, and children’s products. They offer more than visual inspiration: these shades can also be technically reproduced in plastic materials.
