POKETONE™ – Polyketone for Versatile Technical Applications by K.D. Feddersen
Engineering plastics are increasingly required to meet a wide range of performance demands. Alongside high mechanical strength, manufacturers expect excellent chemical resistance, low moisture absorption and efficient processing. With POKETONE™, HYOSUNG CHEMICAL offers a polyketone (PK) that combines these characteristics in a single material, making it suitable for a broad spectrum of technical applications.

POKETONE™ for efficient injection moulding

HYOSUNG began developing polyketone in 2004. Following ten years of research and development, the material was successfully commercialised in 2014. Today, POKETONE™ is manufactured in Ulsan, South Korea, with an annual production capacity of 50,000 tonnes. The material is used in electrical and electronic applications, mechanical engineering, automotive manufacturing, consumer goods, healthcare and e-mobility. It is also suitable for applications involving contact with drinking water and food.

Among the key characteristics of POKETONE™ are its high impact strength, excellent wear resistance and outstanding tribological performance. Thanks to its flexible CO/olefin polymer structure, the material is particularly well suited to components incorporating moving or sliding parts. Its high wear resistance also helps to reduce noise generation during operation.

Another important advantage is its low moisture absorption. POKETONE™ is hydrolytically stable and retains its mechanical properties even under humid operating conditions. In addition, it offers excellent resistance to typical automotive fluids, hydrocarbons, salts, as well as weak acids and alkalis.

The material also offers significant barrier performance. POKETONE™ provides excellent barrier properties against gases and hydrocarbons, while its rapid crystallisation enables short moulding cycle times, supporting efficient injection moulding processes.

A wide range of POKETONE™ polyketones for various application requirements

The product portfolio includes unreinforced, glass fibre reinforced, flame-retardant and modified grades. The flame-retardant grades achieve a UL 94 V-0 classification without the use of halogenated flame retardants, red phosphorus or PFAS. Depending on the grade, approvals are also available for food contact and drinking water applications.

POKETONE™ is free from formaldehyde, bisphenol A (BPA), PFAS and other harmful substances. In addition, the material has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 3.08 kg CO₂ per kilogram of material. With this combination of properties, POKETONE™ represents an excellent complement to established engineering plastics such as PA, POM and PBT across a wide range of technical applications.
