The GRAFE GROUP has developed halogen-free, flame-retardant polypropylene compounds

The plastics experts at GRAFE are introducing a halogen flame retardant PP compound, which can be colored as desired. "Our goal was to develop a material that offers halogen-free, flame-retardant and good mechanical properties along with good flowability and the possibility of free coloration," explains Dr. Jan Stadermann, Technical Assistant at GRAFE.

"We are not just a compounder; we are also a masterbatch developer. We have the expertise to adjust the color of a plastic as needed," the expert explains. The flame retardant compound which itself is colorless can thus be dyed in numerous variants, enabling it to be tailored to the specific requirements of our customers. The PP compound meets Flame-retardant Class UL94-V0 at a wall thicknesses of 1.6 mm and has good mechanical properties. The material also has good flowability and is therefore suitable for the production of thin-walled components.

Moreover, an electrically conductive and halogen-free, flame retardant PP compound is being produced by the development department at GRAFE. This material based on conductive carbon is black and cannot be dyed further. The specific volume resistivity and the surface resistivity is adjustable according to the application. As a result, the product can be offered with resistance values of less than 100 Ohm according to customer requirements.

The conductive material fulfills Flame-retardant Class UL94-V0 at wall thicknesses of 1.6 millimeters. "Many applications in which fire and explosion protection play an important role can therefore be developed," Dr. Stadermann reports. As examples, he mentions containers for transporting flammable substances, conveyor belts, as well as transport and storage containers in explosion and fire-protection areas.
